Media Advisory – NYC Soft Drink Ban

Mayo Clinic Expert Available to Comment on New York Soft Drink Ban

The following Mayo Clinic obesity experts are available to comment on Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on super-sized soft drinks in New York:

Michael Jensen, M.D., endocrinologist and obesity researcher – who says:

“Sweetened soft drinks, especially in excess, are essentially empty calories. There’s no nutritional benefit except if you need a lot of easily consumable energy, which is uncommon except for athletes. You can obtain much more nutritional benefit from water and a piece of fruit. Excess consumption of sweetened soft drinks is one of many contributors to obesity.”

James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., endocrinologist and obesity researcher.

Donald Hensrud, M.D., endocrinologist and director, Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program.

To interview Dr. Jensen, Dr. Levine or Dr. Hensrud, please contact Bob Nellis in Mayo Clinic Public Affairs at 507-284-5005.
