The incidence of Type Two Diabetes has doubled in the U.S. over the past decade. Excess weight suppresses the body’s ability to use insulin. So, the best chance to slow the trend is to get more Americans serious about losing weight. Mayo Clinic has a book that can give you a fighting chance.

I would ask one simple question – do people actually lose weight following your book’s guidelines? We tell patients and students pretty much the same mantra (diet and exercise, portion control, etc.), and yet they HAVE not lost weight. Frankly, if the Taubes folks are right, or some other metabolically based treatment could work, and we don’t consider it viably, then we are doing all Americans a moral disservice. As a college nutrition professor, frankly, I have begun to sow the seeds of bad carbs; try to limit liquid sugars, go with as complex a carbohydrate as possible, and don’t fear healthy fats. I can not ethically preach just “diet and exercise”, when I know it likely will not work!
