Medical Edge Weekend Radio Program hits the Road-Profiles Mayo Clinic Patients at Chicago Marathon

For the first time, our Medical Edge Weekend Radio team with Dr. Tom Shives and Tracy McCray hosted their program on a remote location. They were live from the Chicago Marathon Saturday, October 8 from 9am-10am Central.  In this show, we  learned more about elite athletes from Mayo Clinic cardiology expert, Dr.  Todd Miller, who specializes in sports medicine. He surveyed marathon runners at our Mayo Clinic booth inquiring about training habits and health issues.

The Medical Edge Weekend Team was inspired by Chicago area resident, Mayo Clinic heart tansplant patient and triathlete, Kevin Lue. He and his wife Maureen were guests and told their story to Dr. Shives and Tracy. He credits Mayo Clinic physicians for saving his life. His amazing story has been captured on video by our Medical Edge Team.   Kevin is feeling so well he said he is seriously considering running in next year’s Marathon.

In this year’s marathon, Mayo Clinic cancer patient Cynthia Cycon, also from Chicagoland, could not wait for the starting horn to sound.  She was also interviewed on our radio  program and her positive attitude affected our team and our Mayo Clinic Facebook users who wished her well. She has survived ovarian cancer and is now being treated by Mayo Clinic for breast cancer. She has continued to run, even though at times, it’s been a challenge, it’s always worth it to her.

She was so excited right before her start, she sent this picture.

After successfully finishing the race, we spoke with her on the phone and she said, ” I am a stage 3 breast cancer survivor, and today I ran the Chicago Marathon. The important thing is that I had the opportunity to run it.”  She said she is over the moon right now with excitement and wants to help others.

Our team enjoyed bringing all these stories to you, especially when we profile courageous patients like Cynthia and Kevin. Here is Cynthia, victorious in finishing.

Congratualtions from your friends at Mayo Clinic.
