Music Therapy Eases Patients’ Pain, Helps With Coping

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton recently proclaimed the week of April 18-22, 2011, as Music Therapy Week. This exciting news supports the effectiveness of Music Therapy in the healthcare setting.

Christina Ufer, Music Therapist-Board Certified, uses live music interventions with pediatric patients at Mayo Clinic. “The clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions assists patients in meeting clinical goals,” she says. Music therapists work with the members of the healthcare team to identify patients who may benefit from music therapy.

Music therapy is offered to inpatients with a wide variety of clinical needs. Goals may include, but are not limited to: procedural support, pain or symptom management, increasing self-expression, meeting developmental milestones, psychosocial/spiritual support, increasing coping skills and promoting quality of life.

Mayo Clinic offers Music Therapy to inpatient pediatric patients and to patients in the Child and Adolescent treatment program.
