  2. R Dean Frye Clinic ID 75690172 says:

I have been to Mayo and have not returned happy about some of my service there. Dr Whalen performed Orthopedic surgery on my right foot in removing the infected big toe. The wound that allowed the big toe to get infected was not taken care of and this wound is still an issue. Then Dr S. A. Shapiro begin to work on this right foot along with continuing on my left foot that had a small ulcer on bottom of foot.
The last visit Nov 11 2011 Dr Shapiro managed to cause both right and left foot wounds to get larger until I redressed and now they are both closing with CellerateRX and manuka honey treatment. I have asked several times for Dr Whalen to think about addressing the small bone protrusion on the bottom of my left foot and I finally have given up on his help.
I see that since my insurance BCBS of Florida negotiates a cost that they will pay I get not top of the line care from Doctors not sure what that is about.
I need you to understand that all the nurses and Dr Whalen’s PA have been fabulous except for one of Dr Shapiro’s nurses. They have always treated me marvelously, so I give them a 95% but the Doctors I would have to give Whalen a 35% and Shapiro a 25% rating just from my experience.

    • We are so sorry to hear about your experience at Mayo Clinic with Dr. Whalen and Dr. Shapiro and thank you for discussing your concerns with us. It would be best for you to contact the Office of Patient Affairs to explain your situation and have it addressed by their staff. Please call the main number 904-953-2000 and the operator will direct you to the appropriate representative. Thank you.

I has an accident by falling down on my Left Knee three years ago April 4,2010. I have had two Modesto surgeries and then they finally did a total knee replacement. Three weeks after the knee replacement I started screaming one night in pain, for three days in a row the Doctor had me go to his office and try a new pain medicine, which needless to say it did not work. I was hospitalized put on IV’s so they could try different pain medications that would take this pain to a level where I could tolerate it. After a week in the hospital and them putting me on Oxycontin, Hydromorphone & Gabapentin, I went home, with the Dr’s not really sure why I had such pain.
I was sent to a pain specialist who agreed with the medication and also tried Needle stimulation inserted in my back, to try and block the pain. It really only would help for a day or two but the pain was always there. Finally they inserted a Nero Stimulator into my back. They took six inches of bone out of my spine, and put a tube to insert the wires in and connected it to the nerve that is suppose to be causing the pain, then they put a power pack into my Butt cheek, so I can charge my stimulator once a week or so.
(This was to be an in and out surgery, but after sending me home I went back to the hospital just screaming with pain, because the Dr who did this surgery did not give me anything to take care of the pain after the surgery. I was hospitalized for 9 days on IV’s of enough pain medication to kill a horse is what one of the nurses told me.)
This DR just assumed that the medication that I was on from my Knee surgery would take care of the pain from being cut, but it did not) The stimulator only helps toleration of the pain to a certain extend.
Every day seems to get worse, the last couple of weeks I have notice a crunching sound and it feels like raw bone scraping something when try to walk on it. I always walk with a walker because I never know when my knee is going to go under me and I really am afraid of falling.
I am not ready just to lay in bed or sit in a chair the rest of my life because I can’t find a Doctor who will tell me what is really wrong with me and quit putting a bandage on it.
They tell me I could have RSD,and because of that they can not do any more surgeries or no shots in the knee, but yet they did this major surgery on my back and they stuck needle injections in my back to try and block the pain.
Last time I went to the Doctors two weeks ago he told me He thinks I might have Percedes, gave me more pills and it did not help. Last week I went back and he says no stop those pills because he did not think that was the problem.
All I really pray for is someone to just be honest enough to tell me what is really wrong and if it is fixable lets fix it and get off of all this alwful medicine I am on and let me have my life back. I hate the medication and the way it makes me feel.
I just turned 65 (going on 39)and I have worked since I was 11 years old and I am not ready to retire, or give up my life and be a piece of furniture in my home. I have so much to live for and so much to give to others.
I can’t believe that something can’t be done to help me. Please I am begging you if you know of anyone that may be willing to step up and help me, I would be so grateful. I have been thru hell and back the last three years and still I am no better, only getting worse.
I also must tell you I have been told where to go and when to go with all these Doctors because it was Workmens Comp Doctors, and I have never had a choice.
I know that I have a right to change Doctors if I am not satisfied or if I want a second opinion.
Well now is the time, I need an honest, caring Doctor who is not afraid to stand up to Workmens comp and have a heart for the patient.
I have no animosity against any of these Doctors, I just feel like they feel they are limited to what they can and can’t do because it is workmens comp.
I am so thankful for a husband that has been there through all the pain and tears, supporting me with his tender loving care or I don’t feel I would be here today, He is my strength.
Please respond one way or the other, I am reaching out for my life back.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and God Bless You all for what you have done for others.
    You give me hope.
