Mayo Clinic Awarded $11 Million-plus for Pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenomics – the study of how medication is affected by individual genomes – is a major field of study. It allows physicians to prescribe drugs accurately and safely. One dose does not fit all. In fact, for some a standard medication may have no impact, while for others it may have adverse reactions.

Richard Weinshilboum, M.D., the principal investigator on this award from the National Institutes of Health,  has been a leader in the field for a generation. He explained Mayo’s focus in a recent interview.

Associated with the research grant are two resource center grants for facilities that will serve the national pharmacogenomics network — totaling another $5 million.

This sounds fascinating. I never realized that individual genomes reacted differently with medication. It does explain a lot.
