Statement on Medicaid Participation

As of Jan. 1, 2010, Mayo Clinic will discontinue participation with Nebraska and Montana Medicaid due to a combination of factors: very low reimbursement rates, the volume of administrative requirements, and the fact that these states are not part of Mayo Clinic’s primary service area. We are communicating this change to patients now to give them time to make other provisions for their care.

Mayo Clinic will continue to provide care for Medicaid patients from our primary service region – Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. We remain committed to caring for patients from other states when the required care cannot be delivered effectively closer to home. Each patient’s case is reviewed individually, and charity care is sometimes an option.

In 2008, Mayo Clinic provided nearly half a billion dollars in services to Medicaid patients. Based upon a review of Mayo Clinic patient records over the past two years, fewer than 50 existing patients will be affected by this change.
