Mayo Clinic and Grameen Healthcare are exploring opportunities to benefit global, underserved populations by leveraging Mayo Clinic’s knowledge and expertise in health care and Grameen’s capabilities in effective, low-cost distribution models. Following an initial demonstration project in Bangladesh in 2009-2010, the two organizations will investigate additional endeavors in Bangladesh as well as the application of learned, low-cost health care delivery models in the United States.

There are a lot of interesting models in place exploring low-cost delivery methods; a literature search on the topic will yield interesting studies. In Bangladesh in particular, the Grameen organization has implemented many projects in partnership with a variety of healthcare entities, including such things as low-cost insurance, the use of home health workers, clean water projects, etc. In fact, Mayo Clinic piloted a small project with Grameen utilizing cell phones to gather basic information from community members.
