Michael Camilleri, M.D., a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, led a study of prucalopride as a treatment for severe chronic constipation. The study, results of which were published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that prucalopride appears to offer significant relief to patients with severe chronic constipation while minimizing the likelihood of cardiac-related side effects. Just woundering how long it will take to be available in market.
Prucalopride is a “5-HT4″ prokinetic agent for constipation. One of the early problems of previous generation 5-HT4 agents was that it caused cardiac problems. This has made the FDA very cautious in interpreting the data. Moreover, there has been a very long lag time between the prucalopride design and clinical trial, leading many to suspect that there have been internal problems with the medication concerning side effects. Hope it works out and people get another weapon in the arsenal against chronic constipation!
